Timber Pavilion in Boise
A Stunning Back Yard Retreat
With some planning and design, your back yard can become your personal retreat! We recently partnered with an architect in Boise to design and build a timber pavilion for his own back yard. No detail was overlooked in his stunning design. The hip roof pavilion roof was 20’x26’ and used a combination of timber rafters and beams, and tongue and groove decking. The homeowner added accents like a stone fireplace, copper gutters, star pendants, heaters, and more to make this pavilion a one-of-a-kind space.
The timber roof system was built with a series of timber components including a ridge beam, hip rafters, common rafters, jack rafters, and carry beams. Joinery became an important discussion including using birdsmouth cuts where the rafters met the beams, and compound miter cuts to match up the pitch of the roof and the diagonal of the hip rafter. One of the most custom pieces chosen for this pavilion was using bent metal plates to connect the hip rafters to the ridge beam. These metal plates would be highly visible so getting them right mattered to the aesthetic of this project. Using bent metal allowed for a more streamlined look (versus a boxy industrial look) and met the necessary engineering requirements.
With a project like this, we cut and assemble the entire structure in our shop. Then we label all connections, disassemble, and ship to the customer for them to install on-site. We make sure to provide assembly instructions and ship any connecting components (specialized screws, metal brackets, etc) with the timber features. For a peak into our shop, check out this pavilion during construction (see photo PG-5).
This project really exemplifies how we like to work with clients. We become partners in designing and bringing that design to life. Homeowners who partner with us are excited to enter into a collaborate relationship to create an exceptional space that they love and are excited to share with others.
